What is a Pennsylvania Constable?

A Pennsylvania constable is an independently elected public official whose authority comes from Pennsylvania law. This office is separate from the court, police department, sheriff's office, municipal government, landlord, and any law firm.

The office of Constable has existed in Pennsylvania since the colonial era and remains part of the Commonwealth’s local justice system today.
